Markers of liver fibrosis: what to expect

Non-invasive tests for liver fibrosis allow us to assess your liver safely and easily. Using specialist blood tests like FibroTest® or imaging with Fibroscan®, your doctor can detect early signs of liver damage, determine the extent of scarring (fibrosis), and guide treatment to prevent further harm. These tests give reassurance and let us manage your liver health proactively, often before symptoms appear.

FibroTest® measures six markers in your blood. The results are combined to give an overall indication of any liver damage. The test involves a simple blood sample taken from a vein in your arm, which is sent to our laboratory. Results usually come back within a few days.

Fibroscan® is a special type of ultrasound that measures liver stiffness. Increased stiffness can indicate scarring (fibrosis) or fat accumulation. The test is quick, painless, and provides immediate results to help guide your care.

Once we have your results, we’ll discuss them with you in detail. Depending on the cause, we may recommend lifestyle changes, such as reducing alcohol, improving your diet, losing weight, or starting treatment for conditions like hepatitis. We’ll also set up follow-up appointments to monitor your liver health closely.

When should I have tests for liver fibrosis?

Markers of liver fibrosis help us to detect and manage liver damage early – sometimes before symptoms appear, helping prevent long-term complications. We might recommend these tests if you have risk factors such as high alcohol intake, a fatty diet, obesity, or viral hepatitis. They can be used to identify and help with:

  • Fatty liver
  • Fibrosis (scarring) of the liver
  • Liver disease due to lifestyle factors
  • Liver disease due to infection
  • Monitoring progress
