What is rheumatology?

Rheumatology is the medical specialty focused on diagnosing and managing conditions that affect the joints, muscles, and soft tissues. Our specialists provide expert assessment and treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal and autoimmune disorders, helping patients maintain mobility, reduce pain, and protect long-term joint and tissue health.

Conditions we manage include:

  • Osteoarthritis – joint wear and tear from ageing or injury, with tailored pain management and rehabilitation, and coordination for surgical interventions if needed.
  • Soft tissue rheumatism – disorders such as rotator cuff tendonitis, tennis elbow, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tenosynovitis, and Achilles tendon inflammation.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) – an autoimmune inflammatory arthritis; early diagnosis allows treatment with disease-modifying therapies to prevent joint damage.
  • Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) & Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) – inflammatory forms of arthritis treated with disease-modifying agents; PsA may require co-management with dermatology, and AS requires ongoing monitoring.
  • Other inflammatory arthritis – including reactive arthritis, juvenile arthritis, and arthritis associated with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) – an autoimmune disorder affecting joints, skin, muscles, nerves, and sometimes major organs.
  • Vasculitis – inflammation of major blood vessels caused by an abnormal immune response.
  • Other connective tissue disorders – including Sjögren’s syndrome, polymyalgia rheumatica, dermatomyositis, and polymyositis.
