What is respiratory medicine?

Respiratory medicine focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of conditions affecting the lungs and respiratory system. We see patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, sleep apnoea and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), provide ongoing care for conditions like sarcoidosis, and investigate new or unexplained respiratory symptoms.

The symptoms we commonly investigate include:

  • Breathlessness
  • Chest pain
  • Persistent cough
  • Wheezing
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Systemic symptoms such as night sweats, fever, or rigors

Respiratory diagnostic tests we offer

Our approach to diagnosing respiratory conditions begins with a detailed medical history and a comprehensive clinical examination. Based on these findings, further investigations may be recommended, including blood tests, urinalysis, and imaging studies. These tests help our specialists accurately diagnose respiratory conditions, monitor disease progression, and develop personalised treatment plans.

The diagnostic tests and scans we offer include:

  • Chest X-rays – a first-line, quick assessment of the lungs.
  • CT scans – cross-sectional imaging, often available the same day.
  • PET CT scans – detailed imaging for specific cases, usually requiring a follow-up appointment.
  • Pulmonary function testing (spirometry) – measures lung capacity and airflow.
  • Fibreoptic bronchoscopy – allows direct visualization of the airways.
  • Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) – minimally invasive imaging of lung tissue and lymph nodes.
  • CT screening and the Early CDT-Lung test – early detection tools for lung cancer.
