What is neurophysiology?

Neurophysiology is a specialist area of neurology that focuses on how the nerves and muscles are working. At The Physicians’ Clinic, we use safe, well-tolerated tests, including Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) studies in the diagnosis of a wide variety of problems that affect nerves or muscles.

Typically, we would use them to investigate symptoms such as numbness, tingling, pain, unsteadiness, weakness or fatigue. They help provide a clear diagnosis and guide us towards the right treatment for you. Most tests take about 30 minutes, are comfortable and leave no after-effects, so you can get back to your normal routine straight away.

Neurophysiology diagnostics include:

  • Nerve conduction studies (NCS): used to diagnose conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or neuropathy
  • Electromyography (EMG): used to identify nerve damage, inflammation, or muscle disease
  • Single-fibre EMG: a more detailed test to help diagnose conditions such as chronic autoimmune disease myasthenia gravis
