What is nephrology?

Nephrology is the branch of medicine in which nephrologists investigate, diagnose, prevent and treat kidney problems. These include:

  • Chronic kidney disease, or CKD
  • Acute kidney failure
  • Hypertension (or high blood pressure)
  • Specific renal diseases: including glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, HIV-related kidney disease, drug toxicity or renal tubular disease
  • Electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities
  • Kidney stones
  • Blood in the urine (haematuria)
  • Protein in the urine (proteinuria)
  • Kidney transplant care

Nephrology diagnostic tests

At The Physicians’ Clinic, most nephrology tests can be carried out on-site, often on the same day as your consultation. This means you can have your investigations and review completed without unnecessary delays, giving you answers when you need them, and a clear plan for the next steps in your care.

Our diagnostic services include:

  • Renal ultrasound.
  • CT scans of the kidneys.
  • MRI of the kidneys or kidney blood vessels.
  • Kidney biopsy (to diagnose and assess the stage of kidney disease).
  • Urine microscopy and cytology.
  • 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
  • Specialist diagnostics for hypertension (hormonal profiling and adrenal imaging).
  • Specialist diagnostics for kidney stones (including dietetic assessment and biochemical profiling).
