Ultrasound scans: what to expect

An ultrasound scan is a safe and painless way to see inside your body. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of your organs, soft tissues, and blood vessels, helping us detect and monitor a wide range of medical conditions.

Most scans are straightforward and comfortable. We apply a gel to the area being examined and move a small device called a transducer over your skin to capture images. For some scans, like those of the pelvic organs or prostate, the transducer may be gently inserted into a body cavity. Scans usually take between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the area and the complexity of the check.

Preparation depends on the type of scan. For example, abdominal scans may require fasting for a few hours beforehand. We’ll give you clear, personalised instructions before your appointment so you know exactly what to do.

Yes. Ultrasound is safe, painless, and uses sound waves instead of radiation, making it suitable for most people, including pregnant women.
