X-rays: what to expect

An X-ray is a quick, safe, and non-invasive imaging test that uses a very small amount of radiation to create pictures of the inside of your body. It’s especially useful for examining bones, joints, and the chest, helping us to spot fractures, infections, or other conditions accurately and efficiently.

During the X-ray, you’ll be positioned in front of the machine while a small dose of radiation passes through your body to create an image. The procedure is painless and usually only takes a few minutes.

Preparation is minimal. You may be asked to remove jewellery or clothing over the area being examined. If you’re pregnant, it’s important to let the radiographer know so extra precautions can be taken.

X-rays use a very low dose of radiation and are generally safe for most patients. The benefits of getting an accurate diagnosis usually far outweigh any small risks.

A radiologist reviews the images, and your doctor will discuss the findings with you at your follow-up appointment. In urgent situations, results can sometimes be available the same day.
